Welcome to the car sharing facility for the EEDA Ideas Talk 'Playing to Win' taking place at Tattersalls, Newmarket on 4 March 2008.

Suzy Howes & associates ltd is pleased to offer this car share facility for participants in this event at Tattersalls.

There are plenty of car-parking spaces at Tattersalls, but by sharing transport with someone coming from the same area allows people to benefit from the convenience of travelling by car, whilst alleviating the associated problems of congestion and pollution. We won't pretend that sharing one car journey to this eventwill stop global warming in its tracks, but why not do a little bit of good for the planet and increase your networking time by sharing your journey with with someone with similar professional interests?

We would be very grateful for any comments or feedback you might have on this service, so please feel free to e-mail us at [email protected] with your views and opinions. This is solely a travel information service and we cannot be held responsible for any journeys that don't work out as planned. Likewise the drivers and passengers who arrange their journeys using this service are under no legal obligation to their travelling companions or to us to make any journeys.

We've listed below some of the commonly asked questions about car-sharing - when you are ready to proceed with either offering or requesting a lift, click here

How do I contact the driver/passenger?

Having selected a suitable travelling match, you should make contact (to agree a time and place to meet) using their e-mail address. We do not recommend that you exchange home addresses (for security reasons), and we advise all travellers to meet in public locations, such as a train station or bus station, which are easy to get to and away from, should the lift fail. An exchange of mobile phone numbers is useful for last minute changes.

Will I be able to pick and choose my car sharing partner?

Please make it clear in your offer or request for a car share any requirements you have - a non-smoker, a passenger/driver of the same sex etc

Will it affect my car insurance?

We are not suggesting that any passengers should pay drivers, but if you did decide between yourselves that a contribution towards fuel should be made, you will find the following quote helpful.

"Giving Lifts - All ABI motor insurers have agreed that if your passengers contribute towards your running costs your insurance cover will not be affected, as long as lifts are given in a vehicle seating eight passengers or less. This agreement does not apply if you make a profit from payments received or if carrying passengers is your business." (Source: ABI website, 2005)

If you are in any doubt contact your insurance company.

How safe is car sharing?

When it comes to travelling, every delegate is responsible for his or her own safety. However we do recommend that delegates follow some simple security measures outlined below:
  • Avoid exchanging home addresses with your travelling companion before you meet them.
  • Arrange to meet in a public place.
  • Inform a friend or family member who you will be travelling with, when and to where.
  • Show each other your I.D.s - passports, or driving licences - so you know you're travelling with the right person.
  • You are under no obligation to go ahead with any car share. If you have any doubts about your travelling companion, for any reason, you should avoid travelling with them.
